Sluggers Home Openers 1991-1999
The Sluggers came out ready to play year in and year out! Well, almost all the time anyway. Why? Because we started practice earlier than most teams! (chances are, all teams) We were ready and we came to play!
1991 Novato League Home Openers
Spring 91' - The opener was all Sluggers in a 23-0 blow out against Toolworks. Scotty throws a five hit shutout in his first start of the year. Bill, Gerry and Rex gets three hits each and Coach Dave scores four runs in leading the way. The Sluggers big rally was in the 3rd inning as 15 runs crossed the plate.
Summer 91' - Sluggers win the home opener 18-4 vs Ignacio Rotary. The Sluggers score 8 runs in the 5th inning to put the game away. Rich Bethel the new shortstop scores 3 runs and gets 3 base hits. Coach Dave now playing 2nd base is good for 3 hits. Big Jack pitched for the win and also hit a big 3 run double.
1992 Novato League Home Openers
Spring 92' - The Sluggers lost the home opener 7-5 to Maya. Good defense by both teams and both just a little flat. The Sluggers won the next 9 games in a row to win the league title!
Summer 1992 - Sluggers win the home opener 14-6 vs CRF. Bill Cline gets things going with a 3 run home-run in the first inning. Rex Rolle and Carl Yonkers had big 2 outs hits in the 4th inning as the Sluggers scored 5 times.
1993 Novato League Home Opener
Spring 93' - The Sluggers win the home opener 10-7 against The Breakers in a come from behind win. Chris Hopkins hits a 2 run triple in the 2nd inning and 3 batters later, Coach Dave hits a 2 run triple. Billy Cine nailed a 2 run double in the 6th inning for the final runs.
1994 Novato League Home Openers
Spring 94' - Sluggers win a close one 6-5 vs CRF. Bill (Hack Man) Cline goes deep with a 3 run blast in the first inning. The Sluggers played some good defense while turing a couple of DP's late in the game, and comes up with the victory.
Summer 94' - Sluggers shutout Mill Valley 12-0 in the home opener. Scotty throws another shutout! Big Rob and Bill Cline hit back to back homers in the first inning. Big Rob goes deep again in the 4th and the Sluggers defense turns 3 DP's in this one.
1995 Novato League Home Openers
Spring 95' - The Sluggers slug it out with The Law and came away winners by the score of 14-11. Bobby gets 4 hits. Big Bad Bob has 3 hits. Ed knocks in 3 runs and the Sluggers score 7 runs in the top of the 5th. The Law fires back with 5 runs in their bottom of the 5th. Sluggers lead cut to 14-11 and that's your final score.
Summer 95' - The Sluggers beat up on Marin Color in the home opener 17-4. Glen Hearrell and Bob bangs out 3 hits each to lead the way. Gerry Steppler chips in with 2 hits, 2 rbi and 2 runs scored. Again the defense is hard to score on!
1996 Novato League Home Opener
Spring 96' - Sluggers win the home opener 7-2 vs W.B.E. Coach Dave playing 2nd base and Tim Watts moving over to 3rd base, turn 2 DPs late in the game to shut it down. Both Ed and Bill had 2 run doubles.
(Team Note) Sluggers go on to a 8-2 record to win the league championship! Then SWEEPS the playoffs again for the second year in a row with a shutout vs W.B.E. 8-0. Then BEATS C.R. 12-10 in the championship game. Bill, Gerry, Rickie Oats, Bob and Coach Dave all got 3 hits each. The Sluggers win both League and playoffs championship for the first time.
1997 Novato League Home Openers
Spring 97' - Sluggers beat C.R. 5-3 in the home opener in a game of all defense, or was it no big hits today. Glen and Tim are good for 3 hits each. Scotty and Bob drive in 2 runs and the Sluggers play great defense in the first game of the season. So did C.R. Giving up 5 runs in slow-pitch softball, you should win those games.
Summer 97' - Sluggers win the home opener against The Buzz 7-2. Ed Schwab and Ricky Oaks had 2 run doubles for our big rally. Then the defense shuts it down for the win.
1998 Novato League Home Openers
Spring 98' - The Sluggers beat Los Lobos 14-5 in the opener. Big Rob goes deep in the 3rd inning with a 3 run rocket. The Sluggers score 5 times, then added 4 more runs in the 4th to put the game away. Bob had a 4 for 4 game and 3 RBI. Bill had 3 hits and a couple of RBI.
Summer 98' - The Sluggers open the summer league at the New I.V.C. Softball Fields in Novato. How long did we wait for this? The wait was over and the Sluggers go out and get shutout in the opener 3-0 by Los Lobos. I really didn't want to put this score on here. We didn't hit and when the ball was hit hard, it found a glove! The Sluggers defense gives up only 3 runs... and we still lost. Los Lobos didn't make any mistakes and made no errors in the field.
1999 Novato League Home Opener
Spring 99' - Sluggers get beat again in the home opener 10-3. This time by the Bandits. After only one game, it felt like it was going to be a long spring. It turned out to be an up and down year and the Sluggers end up with another season under .500. Losing meant a change was coming soon. The 99' season would be our last in the Novato league and it was time for some players to move on. The Sluggers needed a change. TBC....
