Sluggers Greatest Games
I came up with a few classics you might
enjoy. The Sluggers did. Starting with the 91 Sluggers softball team,
we'll be re-living some of the great games played by the Sluggers teams
through out the years. The score books from the early years,
(1978-1983) are missing, got stolen, or been destroyed. Coach Dave was
known to keep notes about other teams, players, managers and even the
umps in the score books.
We play 7 innings of ball most of the time! I'll list the Top 7 games, (maybe one for extra innings) in Sluggers history against some of the top teams in the league! You got to beat the top teams to have a chance to win the league title. That also meant. You had to beat the Sluggers, if you wanted first place!
Starting in 1991.... The Sluggers are back after a long layoff.
The return of Sluggers Softball. Sluggers shutout Valley Baptist 23-0 in the first game of the season! Coach Dave batting leadoff bangs out 3 hits and scores 4 runs. Billy the Kid Cline goes 3 for 3 with 4 rbi and a ringing 2 run triple! Gerry Steppler, much younger then had 3 hits with a run scored and 1 rbi. Big Jack Maynard had 4 rbi, including a long 3 bagger. Jim Teague had 2, rbi doubles and Rex Rollie had 3 clean hits and scored 2 runs. Scott Rathaus pitched a 5 hitter with 3 K's and one walk. More shutouts would follow.
The Sluggers big inning came in the second as they batted around and scored 10 runs. Then added 7 more runs in the top of the 5th inning. Game over in 5.

| Valley Baptist | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | x | x | 0 | 5 | 3 |
Sluggers biggest inning in team history buries Maya 22-8. Down 5-4 headed to the top of the 5th, Sluggers explode for 18 runs! Leftfielder Chris Hopkins leads the way with 4 runs scored on 3 hits, plus 2 rbi. Big Jack Maynard belts a 3 run home run in the big inning to end the scoring! Jack had a nice 5 rbi game. Also was the winning pitcher.
In the 5th inning, 21 batters came to the plate and 18 scored. Six players had at least 2 runs scored, 2 rbi and 2 hits. All players helped in the slaughter.

Sluggers shutout TJ's Batman 5-0 in a defensive thriller. The Sluggers put 2 runs on the board in the first inning. Tim Watts starts the game off with a base hit to left, and scored when Bobby Lavoring hit a triple down the right field line. Billy the Kid Cline knocked him in with a sac fly. Sluggers added 2 more runs in the second inning as the Batman shortstop made an throwing error on a DP ball for one run. Rickie Oats drove home the other run with a base hit to center. The Sluggers last run was scored in the 6th inning. With one out Gerry Steppler hit one up the middle for a base hit, then Dan Turner follow with a base hit to right sending Gerry to third base. He came home on a sac fly by Chris Hopkins. End of scoring!
Scotty throws another shutout, he gave up only 6 hits with 1 walk. The defense turned 4 DP's, (3 infield). Chris Hopkins playing left field threw out a runner at the plate in the 4th inning to keep the shutout alive! The Batman defense made only one error and turned two DP's, one with the bases loaded. When these two teams hooked up on the ball field it was all business, and all players from both teams showed up for the big show down! This was the first time TJ's ever got shutout.

The 1997 Sluggers come back to defeat their old rivals, TJ's Batman in last AB's! The Batman team lead 10-5 headed to the 7th inning. Hoping for the win. Didn't happen! Sluggers scored 7 runs to take the lead 12-10, and hold on for a great come from behind victory, 12-11. Bob, (OF) Bill, (C) and Scott, (SS) all got banged up in this rematch of the top two teams. It was a game of war when these two teams came together on the diamonds.

The first game is against Couches Ect. (aka, Door Tech) The Sluggers first year in the 40 & Over league. You'll also read about the Sluggers' Greatest Rivals' of All-Time! (they earned that) The winner is..... Twin Oaks.... Able Fence.... Kids Gone Bad..... No wait..... KGB..... The Sluggers still kicked their butts!
These are just a few of our greatest games! We had a lot of classics with the Kids Gone Bad/Able Fence/Twin Oaks. Both high and low scoring affairs. They were a BIG pain in our game!
This was the first season in the 40 & Over league in 2000, against the #1 team in the league. Couches Ect. won the league title the year before, (12-0) came into this game with 4 wins, and tied with the undefeated Sluggers for 1st place. After a slow start and only trailing 5-3, the Sluggers scored 7 runs in the 4th inning on their way to a 17-10 victory, and 5th win in a row! The Sluggers get big games from John (smooth) Bulleri, 3 run home run during the 7 run rally. New Slugger Nelson, hit 2 long home runs, while driving in 5 runs!
| Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | R | H | E |
| Sluggers | 0 | 3 | 0 | 7 | 3 | 4 | 0 | 17 | 24 | 1 |
| Couches Ect. | 3 | 2 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 10 | 15 | 2 |
The Sluggers get some revenge! After splitting 2 games during league play, and getting knocked out of 1st place by Twin Oaks, the Sluggers pounded out a 20-7 victory in the playoffs! John Bulleri, (4 rbi) and Bill Cline, (3 rbi) hit 2 run home runs in a 6 run 3rd inning to build their lead to 9-2. Then scored 8 runs in the 6th inning to make sure Twin Oaks was all but done! The Sluggers defense turned 3 DP's that helped keep Twin Oaks from touching home plate more than they did! The Sluggers then defeated Twin Oaks in a hard fought championship game 8-6 and the rivalry is on!
| Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | R | H | E |
| Twin Oaks | 0 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 7 | 14 | 2 |
| Sluggers | 1 | 2 | 6 | 3 | 0 | 8 | x | 20 | 25 | 0 |
This could be one of the greatest come back victories ever in Sluggers history! The Sluggers put 3 runs on the board in the 3rd inning. But Door Tech came right back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom half inning. Door Tech added 3 more runs to lead 6-3 going to the top of the 6th. The door was left opened and the Sluggers scored 3 runs to tie the game 6-6.
No scoring in the 7th and we're going extra innings. That's all it took, as the Sluggers explode for 6 runs before Door Tech could get the first out. They cashed in on 2 more runs to lead 14-6, headed to the bottom of the 8th. Final score, Sluggers 14, The Doors 7.
