SLUGGERS SWEEP

The Sluggers sail to men's over-40 championship. Sitting out first-round play with a bye, the Sluggers posted three consecutive victories to win the Petaluma Parks and Recreation Department's Men's Over-40 Tournament.

Twin Oaks 33 Computers America 9

On the way to a spot in the championship game, the Twin Oaksters scored eight runs in the top of the first inning and clinched in the third on one of two singles by Mike Sagouspe, who also doubled. Scott Dapelo paved the way for the winners with three home runs and two singles, while Jim Huff had a triple, two doubles and a pair of singles, Mark Yanuskiewicz hit for the cycle, John Walker had a double and three singles, and Jim Short doubled three times.

Computers America got a triple and three singles by Fred Lucas, a home run and two singles by John Kalleen, a triple and a couple of singles by Ken Katrino, and a trio of singles each by Mike Maley and Bill Lofgren.

Goodfellas 19 Travel Escapades 7

The Goodfellas definitely didn't fall asleep in the getaway car as they scored six times in the top of the first inning and clinched in the second on the first of two doubles by Brian Hoffman, who also singled twice. The Goodfellas also got two home run and a couple of singles out of Paul Merrill, a triple and two singles by Cort Fernald, and a double and single by Tony Williams

The Travel Agents got a double and a pair of singles by Mike Bicheler, and two-hit outings by Peter Johnson, Bruce O'Brien, Toby Tyler, and Dave Reis.

Twin Oaks 8 Couches Etc. 4

The Twin Oaks team came back from a 2-0 deficit to deadlock the score in the bottom of the second, then clinched in the third on a base hit by Scott Dapelo.

The Oaksters also got three singles by Jim Huff, a home run and single by Alan Garbarino, and two singles each by Mike Sagouspe and Dennis Ferguson, while Russ Jacobs was the only multiple hitter for Couches.

Sluggers 9 Goodfellas 8

Coming off a first-round bye, the Sluggers came out with a slow start, the Sluggers trailed 9-3 in the bottom of the sixth and staged a six-run rally that included a decisive home run by John Williams, who also singled. Bill Cline also had two hits, while the Goodfellas went into the losers' bracket oven despite getting three singles each by Cort Fernald and Ed Callejas, and two-hit showings by Brian Hoffman and a couple of other players.

Couches, Etc. 14 Travel Escapades 5

Down in the losers' bracket, Couches, Etc. scored three times in the top of the first frame and clinched in the seven-run second on a grand slam home run by Mike Thomas. Steve Verdu added a home run and two doubles to the Couches attack, while Mike Speedling and Jeff Evans had a double and two singles each.

The Travel Agents finished with three singles each by Peter Johnson and Bob Pellgrini, a triple and single by Gary Kofoid, a double and single by Dave Reis, and a pair of one-baggers by Chris Deal.

Computers Amercia 14 Goodfellas 13

Computers Amercia stayed alive a after clinching in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Ken Regalia, who also tripled twice, while John Kalleen added a double and three singles to a pair of doubles and a single by Dave Carter, three singles by Bill Lofgren, a double and single by Ken Katrino, and a couple of one-baggers by Fred Lucas.

Whoever sold the Goodfellas their bats had a wonderful sense of humor, although they did get a three singles by Rich Hasselbring, a homer and single by Paul Merrill, and triple and single by Steve Pozegal, and two hits each by Rudy Martel, Cort Fernald and Ed Callejas. In the end, some of the Computers America players helped the Goodfellas carry equipment to their cars. Ya know why? It was outta respect.

Sluggers 20 Twin Oaks 6

The Sluggers assured themselves of a spot in the championship game by clinching in the bottom of the third stanza on a home run by Bill Cline, who also singled. John Bulleri added a double and three singles to the effort, while Bob Bulleri and Larry Klemenson had a double and two singles apiece, Steve Gilday singled three times, and John Williams ripped a triple and single and the Sluggers added 8 more runs in the 6th.

Scott Dapelo paced the Oaksters with a double and a pair of singles, but Mike Sagouspe and Dan Brown where the only other multiple hitters.

Couches Etc. 9 Computers America 0

Back in the losers' bracket, Couches had the deal done in the bottom of the first frame on the first of three singles by Jess Wetsphal, but went on to finish with a double and two singles by Mike Speedling, and a couple of singles each by Dan Sack and Jeff Evans.

Possibly figuring that when you crash, you should do it right, Computers Amercia's hitters had only four singles between them.

Twin Oaks 11 Couches 4

The Twin Oaks team clinched both the victory and a large load of revenge in the bottom of the third inning on the first of two doubles by Scott Dapelo, who had homered in the first. The Oaksters also had a double and two singles by Alan Garbarino, three singles by Mike Sagouspe, and two by Mark McSweeney

The Couches got a triple by Dan Silacci and lone singles by eight others.

Sluggers 8 Twin Oaks 6

Scoring twice in the bottom of the first and three times in the second, the Sluggers led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, where they clinched on a double by Glen Hearrell, who also singled. The Sluggers finished with three singles each by Gerry Steppler and the 'Coach' Dave White, a home run and single by John Bulleri, and a pair of singles each by Larry Klemenson and Steve Sanchez. The Sluggers defense turned 5 DP's.

The Oaksters made things interesting with a four run rally in the seventh, but fell short as John Walker had three singles to go with a couple apiece by Mark Yanuskiewicz, Scott Dapelo, Alan Garbarino, and John Lavin
